Bristol City linked with former Sheffield Wednesday flop

Bristol City are today being linked with a move for former Sheffield Wednesday flop Rodri according to the Bristol Post.

The Spaniard is currently a free agent and would appeal to City due to their striker shortage following the loss of Benik Afobe who is out for the season with a knee injury.

The Robins had also been linked with Gary Hooper and Wilfried Bony but they eventually came to nothing and it now appears they have set their sights firmly on Rodri to replace Afobe.

Bristol City are playing a friendly against Torquay United and he could features for Lee Johnson’s side as they evaluate whether he is worth pursuing on a long term basis.

The former Spain under-21 international has played for ten clubs in three countries before being released by Granada in the summer. Rodri turned out for Sevilla and Barcelona at the start of his playing days before struggling during a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in 2012.

Rodri found the net just once for the Owls in his spell there and they opted against signing him on a permanent deal.

He recently scored five goals in 33 appearances in the Segunda Division from 17 starts and can play as a central striker or in a deeper role.

It appears that the 29-year-old has had a somewhat mixed career at the different clubs he has been at but failed to impress the last time he was in the Championship with Wednesday.

However, seven years later and with him having developed and matured as a player he could be the answer to Bristol City’s striker problems – for the short term at least.
