Bolton Wanderers hand trial to ex-Derby County, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town man

Bolton Wanderers have handed a trial to former Derby County, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town midfielder Timi Elsnik.

The 21-year-old played for the Trotters’ Under-23’s in a game against Crewe Alexandra last night, as per a report by The Bolton News.

Elsnik, who is a Slovenia Under-21 international, is a free agent after being released by Derby County at the end of last season and has been weighing up his options since then.

The midfielder started his career in his native country with spells as a youngster at Zlatoličje and NK Aluminij before moving to England to join the Rams in 2015.

He was initially a key player for Derby’s youth sides but was handed his first team debut in a League Cup tie against Carlisle United in August 2016. He went on to make two further appearances for the Championship side.

Elsnik gained his first taste of regular senior football on loan at Swindon Town during the 2017/18 season and played 22 times for the Robins, chipping in with five goals in all competitions.

He was then shipped out on loan to League Two side Mansfield Town for the first half of the last campaign and scored four goals in 24 games for the Stags before ending the season in League One at Northampton Town.

Elsnik has got experience of playing in the lower leagues under his belt and could prove a useful acquisition for Bolton as they look to bolster their squad.
