Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes that they can capture the signing of Dwight Gayle in January should their injection of money from Qatar come to fruition according to Football Insider.
Leeds currently lie fifth in the Championship but are the favourites to get promoted and Whelan has described Gayle as the ‘perfect short term arrival’ to aid their promotion push.
The ex-Whites’ striker claimed Leeds’ promotion bid is very much in the air and there is no guarantee they will be one of the three sides who go up from the Championship this season with the league being ultra competitive once again.
“I’ve seen the Radrizzani interview and it is exciting for Leeds fans,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He talks about new investment if we get promoted this season.“
“What Leeds need is investment not just for the Premier League, but for the January window. He should be looking to get a loan or some cash front-loaded for January. There is no guarantee we are going to go up.”
“Do a deal now and and get some money in. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, just enough to immediately improve the team.”
“I’m thinking a loan deal for someone like Dwight Gayle. He’d be perfect for us, a proven striker who could well be available and who has a brilliant record in the Championship.”
“I can see him joining. We would just have to match his Newcastle wages, which Leeds probably wouldn’t be able to afford without new investment. That’s the reality.”
Whelan undoubtedly knows a thing or two about quality strikers and Gayle ultimately fits the bill perfectly in particular at this level. He has scored 59 goals in 100 appearances in the Championship and was brilliant on loan at West Brom last season.
