Derby County and Stoke City make contact with ex-Aston Villa midfielder over possible transfer

Free agent midfielder Birkir Bjarnason has claimed that he has held talks with Championship pair Derby County and Stoke City over a potential deal that would see him return to football after his release from Aston Villa earlier this summer.

Earlier this summer, Aston Villa released midfielder Birkir Bjarnason after he was unable to secure a move away in the summer transfer window, allowing him to leave the club and search for a new one as a free agent.

Over the course of the past week or so, it has been reported that Championship pair Derby County and Stoke City are both interested in the Icelandic international. Now, the midfielder has claimed that both the Rams and the Potters have been in contact with him. Speaking to the Icelandic media (as cited by the Derby Telegraph), Bjarnason said:

“Yes, yes, they [Derby and Stoke] have been talking, but there is nothing that has been finished. I’ve been talking to a team for a long time and it happens when it happens. I’m not in a hurry. I’m open to everything and take the position after the games. Then I’ll see what’s best for me.”

Bjarnason spent two and a half years with Aston Villa prior to his release earlier this summer, playing 54 times for the club from January 2017 to 2019. He scored six goals and provided three assists along the way and after featuring frequently under Steve Bruce, he fell down the pecking order under Dean Smith.

He started his career in Norway with Viking FK before heading to Belgium to play for Standard Liege, where he remained for a year before joining Pescara on loan, who he later joined permanently. In his time in Italy, Bjarnason played for Sampdoria as well, moving to Basel in 2015, who he played for 64 times.
