Ex-Arsenal and England defender emerges as front runner for Southend United post

Sol Campbell has emerged as the favourite for the Southend United job.

The Shrimpers are in the hunt for a new manager to replace Kevin Bond, who was sacked last month after a poor start to the season. Gary Waddock has been in caretaker charge since.

Former Barcelona and Celtic star Henrik Larsson has been heavily linked with the role, whilst Adam Barrett, Kevin Nolan and Neil Harris are also in the running.

However, Campbell, who has already been interviewed for the job, is now the 6/4 favourite for the job on SkyBet.

Campbell, who made 73 caps for England during his playing days, is eager to return to the dugout.

The ex-defender played just under 650 games during his playing career with spells at the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Newcastle United and Notts County.

Campbell got his first managerial job in League Two with Macclesfield Town last November when the Cheshire side were rock bottom of the Football League.

However, after eight wins and 12 draws from 30 games, Campbell was able to pull off the great escape with the Silkmen. He remained at the Moss Rose over the summer but resigned from his position as manager last month after just games into the new season.

Campbell did an impressive job with Macclesfield and proved many people wrong. The Southend job in League One would be the next natural progression of his managerial career but he will have to see off some strong competition to get it.
