Lee Johnson backs Bristol City man for future England call-up

Speaking to Bristol Live, Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has said that ‘keeper Daniel Bentley would be in contention for an England call-up if he was playing in the Premier League.

Since joining Bristol City from fellow Championship side Brentford earlier this summer, goalkeeper Daniel Bentley has made a good impression on those at Ashton Gate. He has played an important role in the Robins’ strong start to the season, helping them into 6th place after 11 matches.

Now, speaking after the club’s win over Reading at the weekend, Johnson has heaped praise on Bentley, saying that should some of England’s goalkeepers further up the pecking order pick up injuries, he would back him to make his way in to Gareth Southgate’s squad.

“He’s been top drawer, I think last season his reputation took a bit of a hit and obviously the contract situation enabled us to swoop in and we believe in him.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t think he could be a million miles from an England call-up, maybe a couple of injuries away just because the people ahead of him are not particularly playing and if he was in the Premier League, I think he’s in the type of form where he’d get a call-up.

“We’re delighted with him and I think he’s enjoying his football.”

Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Burnley man Nick Pope and Aston Villa ‘keeper Tom Heaton are the current men in Southgate’s squad, so it will be interesting to see if any of the three drop out to allow Bentley to come into the fold in the future.
