Chelsea join the race for Wigan Athletic man

Chelsea have joined the race for Wigan Athletic striker Joe Gelhardt.

The Premier League side are being linked with the 17-year-old who is being tipped for a big future in the game, as per a report by Daily Record.

Gelhardt, who is from Liverpool, scored his first senior goal for the Latics away at Hull City a couple of weeks ago.

Wigan boss Paul Cook commented on interest in him earlier this month, as per The72:I genuinely know, from the chairman all the way down, we are not looking to sell players like that. We want to grow this club, and enhance it to its full potential. What is that full potential? Well that’s what we’re trying to find out.”

“When teams are doing well, normally their players are coveted by other club. You’ve seen that in recent years, with the likes of Nick Powell and Dan Burn. But for any talented young player in the Championship, 17 years of age like Joffy, the reality is other clubs will be looking at you.”

Gelhardt has risen up through the youth ranks at the DW Stadium and has been prolific for their youth sides. His form has attracted the attention of the England set-up, of whom he has represented at U16, U17 and U18 so far in his career.

The teenager has played four times for Wigan and is likely to be used a lot more up until the January transfer window at least.
