Leeds United risk losing out to West Brom in transfer chase

Leeds United are a side renowned for giving youngsters at the club that breakthrough from the age groups – proof-positive of that is in the current squad.

Relative old-timers such as Kalvin Phillips have made the breakthrough and established themselves in the firest-team whilst the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton did exactly just that last season. For Clarke it led to a £10million+ move to Premier League side Spurs – the winger now loaned back to the Whites for the season.

After rebuilding the youth set-up at Elland Road, Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta have continued to restock it with players from clubs both at home and abroad. After successfully doing so, the Whites still have their eyes peeled for more youngsters for their ranks.

One such young player linked to the West Yorkshire club over the weekend has been exciting Coventry defender Sam McCallum as written about here on The72. Coventry Live reported that the Whites had been tracking the youngster, a player who is still only a 19-year-old. The young left-back has made nine appearances for the first XI at Coventry this season, with most of these being in the league – including many games as a starter.

However, Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey says that United might come unstuck in the face of interest from fellow Sky Bet Championship side West Brom who he says “have set their sights” to compete with local rivals Aston Villa “and other rivals.” Veysey says that Football Insider has been told that the Baggies “are keeping close tabs on McCallum” in a move that could force any Leeds United interest onto the backburner.
