West Bromwich Albion are bidding to beat their local rivals Aston Villa to the signing of teenage sensation Sam McCallum according to Football Insider.

The 19-year-old is currently with fellow Midlands side Coventry City and he has enjoyed an impressive start to the current season in League One.

The Baggies are keeping tabs on the youngster and are looking to fend off competition from other clubs in a bid to get their man.

Leeds United, Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest are also said to be interested in the left back but West Brom are determined to lure him to the Hawthorns.

The battle for McCallum comes after he broke into the Coventry team at the end of last season, following his arrival in the summer of 2018 from non-league Hearn Bay.

The versatile full-back, who can also slot in on the right side of defence, has made a big impression on their manager Mark Robins and he has already made four league starts this season for Coventry who are currently one of only a few sides in the EFL who are still unbeaten.

He has made 15 appearances for Coventry in total and the growing interest in him suggests he could make a move up to a club at a higher level regardless of whether the Sky Blues achieve promotion or not.

West Brom are currently blessed with options in the full back areas with the experienced Kieran Gibbs, the emergence of Nathan Ferguson and the impressive form of new signing Darnell Furlong.

However, with Albion looking to secure promotion this season they will need plenty of options and should their current players attract interest from top flight clubs it could be a wise move to ensure they have enough depth within their ranks.
