Leeds lead but throw away lead in most ‘Leedsy’ performance yet… in Leeds.

Leeds United met Derby County this afternoon in what was billed as a huge game in the Skybet Championship… and the game lived up to the billing as far as domination from the home team goes, but that is not the end of the story.

Marcelo Bielsa will this evening be absolutely fuming as he watched his side completely and utterly dominate a Derby side that was up there with the promotion contenders with the bookies this season, and let for the majority of the game through a sloppy own goal from Max Lowe following an effort on goal from Stuart Dallas in the twentieth minute.

It is difficult to put into words just how dominant The Whites were in this game, but the overwhelming thought, as they missed chance after chance after chance, including a penalty missed by Mateusz Klich in the second half, was that there was a sucker punch building for The Rams.

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich (43) scores a goal and celebrates 0-1 with The Leeds United players during the EFL Sky Bet Championship match between Norwich City and Leeds United at Carrow Road, Norwich, England on 25 August 2018.

As the hosts saw chances for Patrick Bamford come and go on three or four occasions, plus ones for Jack Harrison, Liam Cooper and Eddie Nketiah, that niggling feeling of dread engulfed Elland Road and the place became a cauldron of nerves and Derby County took full advantage.

In the ninety first minute Derby broke with real intent, literally for the first and only time in the entire game, with a flowing move down the right which eventually ended with Chris Martin sweeping the ball past Kiko Casilla from inside the Leeds box.

An absolute gut punch from Derby who come away from Elland Road that, at half time especially, never looked like taking anything back to Pride Park.

This is a tough pill to swallow for the Leeds United fans, who will undoubtedly point fingers at Patrick Bamford yet again, but the Leeds number nine was again excellent in this game… not withstanding the missed chances of a player obviously a little short in confidence.

Leeds stay top with a point but with Swansea City still to play, they could find themselves dethroned by 5pm.
