Middlesbrough boss takes inspiration from Norwich City

Middlesbrough Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate is looking for his team to play attacking, expansive, passing football, and has taken inspiration from Norwich City.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Middlesbrough’s trip to Cardiff this weekend, Woodgate drew comparisons between his team and Premier League side Norwich City.

“You watch the way a team like Norwich have developed, that’s really encouraging” he said. “It shows what’s possible.

“You look at the way they’ve developed and the way they’ve stuck to their principles, it’s something to aspire to, but you have to go right back and look at the recruitment they did.

“Okay, they got a lot of players and some of them were on frees, but they’re good players and fit perfectly into what they want to do. That’s important. You need to know what you’re getting and they recruited really well.”

Middlesbrough weren’t able to spend big in the transfer window this summer, with purse strings tight and parachute payments having ran out.

Boro made four first team signings, with Tomas Mejias returning to the club after being sold to Omonia in Cyprus one year earlier, Marc Bola arrived from Blackpool, and Anfernee Dijksteel and Marcus Browne signed from Charlton and West Ham respectively.

“The manager has done a great job” Woodgate continued. “Both in terms of getting the players and then moulding them into how he wants to play.”

“I know what I believe in and I intend to stick to it. I’ll carry on doing that,” added the Boro Head Coach.
