Tony Mowbray tips Blackburn Rovers for a “huge career” after first Championship start

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has said that midfielder John Buckley’s start against Millwall was the first of many, as he came into the Rovers side for his first start in the Championship.

Young midfielder John Buckley is highly rated at Blackburn Rovers and has been heavily involved in the early stages of the 2019/20 campaign, starting in two EFL Cup games and making five substitute appearances in the Championship.

At the weekend, he made his first ever start in the Championship against Millwall as Rovers ran out 2-0 winners at Ewood Park. Now, speaking to the club’s official website, manager Tony Mowbray has said that Buckley’s first start was the first of many, tipping him for a “huge career”. Mowbray said to the Lancashire Telegraph:

“The fact that John Buckley started the game shows that as a coaching staff we all feel that John Buckley is going to have a huge career in the game.  He has such fast feet, is like twinkle-toes the way he moves the ball.

“But sometimes with young players, this is the Championship, the second level of English football and it’s a bit different from Under-23s. Until you throw them in, you won’t know.

“John will reflect on that. But what I know is that he wants to watch, with a coach, every touch he has with the ball, could he have done it better? He will learn.”

Competition for spots in Tony Mowbray’s midfield is rife at the moment, so it will be interesting to see if Buckley, 19, is able to nail down a place in the starting eleven.
