West Brom to see off interest from Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday in defender chase

West Brom are set to beat Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday to the signing of defender Saul Shotton.

The 18-year-old has been targeted by the Baggies’ Championship rivals, as per a report by Derbyshire Live.

Preston North End are also believed to have been kept tabs on him but to no avail it seems.

Shotton has become a free agent after Bury’s expulsion from the Football League and has not been short of suitors.

Shotton, who was highly-rated by the Shakers, featured for West Brom’s reserve side in a game against Mansfield last week but will make his move permanent now after doing well on trial.

The centre-back started his career at local side Stoke City and rose up through the youth ranks at the Bet365 Stadium. However, he left the Potters in 2017 and subsequently joined Bury.

He made his senior debut for the North-West side in September 2017 in an EFL Trophy tie against Rochdale. He then went onto make six appearances in all competitions for the Shakers last season as they were promoted from League Two under Ryan Lowe, four of which came in the league.

He was still technically on the books at Bury during their turbulent summer which ended in them being expelled from the EFL.

Shotton has had to move on from Gigg Lane and has found an exciting move in West Brom. He will now be hoping to get the deal over the line and compete to get into their first team in the future.
