Derby County face huge blow ahead of Leeds United test

Derby County face a huge blow ahead of Leeds United test as they are set to be without Tom Lawrence as reported on their official website.

The Welsh international picked up his fifth booking of the season in Friday night’s 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at Pride Park and will now miss the encounter at Elland Road.

Lawrence was instrumental in their game against Huddersfield in the opening game of the Championship season where he scored two goals and was influential in their victory. However, the Rams have been winless since then and Lawrence’s performances have also deteriorated.

Despite his poor form in recent weeks, Lawrence will still be a big miss for Phillip Cocu’s side. He has been a frustrated figure since that opening day victory having failed to score or create an assist since then.

He will now serve a one-match suspension and Cocu expressed his disappointment to lose one of his key players. “It is frustrating because to play seven games and have five bookings is too much.”

“Especially for a winger, it’s too many. It wasn’t necessary to get booked at the end of the game. We have to do without him. He is an important player for us. We do have options in an attacking sense and someone will come in to replace him for this game.”

Jamie Paterson is the most likely option to replace Lawrence out wide should Cocu not wish to tinker with his formation for the trip to Leeds.

With both Florian Jozefzoon and Mason Bennett flattering to deceive so far this campaign, Paterson presents a like-for-like replacement for Derby and this weekend could be his chance to prove to Cocu why he deserves to be in the starting line up ahead of Lawrence.
