Lincoln City targeting Newport County and Wycombe Wanderers as they search for a new manager

Lincoln City are targeting Newport County boss Michael Flynn and Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth as their search for a new boss continues according to Sky Sports News sources.

Previous boss Danny Cowley left the club last week as he took up the reins at Championship side Huddersfield Town, taking his backroom staff with him.

The League One side have been in talks with a number of candidates over the last week, with Gareth Ainsworth and Michael Flynn among the leading contenders for the role.

There have been rumours that talks with Ainsworth broke down after he rejected their initial offer but discussions between them are said to have resumed. However Ainsworth has recently reiterated his commitment to his current side.

Michael Flynn is still the bookmakers favourite for the role and is still one of the candidates that Lincoln are looking at. Flynn spoke to Lincoln’s hierarchy over the weekend about the vacancy and is said fit the criteria set by Lincoln chairman Clive Nates.

Nates is apparently keen to appoint a young, ambitious manager in the same mould as Cowley who can take the club forward in a similar vein.

The Imps are currently preparing for Tuesday’s trip to Rochdale in League One, with coaches Jamie McCombe and Andy Warrington set to be in charge.

Lincoln will undoubtedly want to resolve the managerial situation as soon as possible with their hierarchy not wanting their promising start to the season to be derailed by the current uncertainty surrounding them.
