Joe Gelhardt comments after scoring his first senior goal for Wigan Athletic

Joe Gelhardt has said scoring his first senior goal for Wigan Athletic on Saturday against Hull City was a “surreal” moment.

The 17-year-old came off the bench for the Latics at the KCOM Stadium and equalised to make it 2-2 to hand his side a decent point away from home.

Gelhardt, who is an England Under-18 international, is being tipped for a big future in the game and has been linked with Premier League clubs over the past couple of months.

He discussed his first goal for Wigan to their official club website after the match on Saturday: “It’s a surreal moment for me and my family. I wish they were here to experience it, but they couldn’t make it unfortunately. I’m over the moon to score my first league goal for this club.”

“The gaffer said to me before I came on ‘just grab me a goal, it’s not that hard is it?’, so at that point I was laughing, but when it actually happened I couldn’t believe it. It came to me and I turned, but before I’d even thought about it I’d already hit the ball. It hit the back of the net and I froze. I didn’t know how to celebrate, but I was made up when it went in.”

He added: “We were in a tough position getting beat 2-1, so it’s a great result to get a draw away from home. It’s exactly what we needed to kick on now and hopefully pick up more points next week against Charlton. It’s my type of game, getting the ball in the box and trying to beat the defender one-v-one and that’s what I did to score today.”
