Garry Monk hails Sheffield Wednesday’s “professional performance” against Huddersfield Town

Garry Monk got off to a winning start in charge of Sheffield Wednesday after his newly inherited side beat Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town 2-0 away today.

Goals from Steven Fletcher and substitute Sam Winnall meant the Owls travelled back to Sheffield with all three points.

Monk, who has previously managed Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, appeared to have an effect on the Wednesday players.

The visitors were dynamic with two pacey wingers in Josh Murphy and Kadeem Harris, organised and took their chances when they came.

Monk was pleased with how the game went and told Wednesday’s official club website after the match: “You have to be pleased with any win in this division and particularly at what is a difficult place to come to with a new manager as well. But we did our jobs, we scored at the right times I thought, and it was a thoroughly professional performance.”

“Defensively and offensively we got it right and credit to the players because they carried out what we wanted them to do and they deserve the three points. Of course, we can do things better, that’s football and from a coaching perspective there are always things to improve. But that will come with time. I’ve been in the job a few days and there’s a lot to work on but today I was pleased with the performance and pleased with the result.”

He added: “It was a lovely reception and to get the win for those fans was really pleasing. Everyone around the place, at the club, the training ground and in the city has made me feel so welcome.”
