Derby County boss believes VAR will be introduced into the Championship in “one or two” seasons time

Derby County manager Philip Cocu has said to FourFourTwo that he believes that VAR will be introduced into the Championship in the next “one or two seasons” after the Rams were on the end of a “hard to take” penalty decision in their 1-1 dwar with Cardiff City.

Derby County and Cardiff City played out a 1-1 draw at Pride Park on Friday night as Championship football returns after the international break. Left-back Scott Malone put Derby County ahead after just six minutes, rebounding from Martyn Waghorn’s shot.

Cardiff City’s summer signing Robert Glatzel was then fouled in the box by Rams captain Richard Keogh. The German striker then picked himself up to fire past Kelle Roos and bag his first goal for the club, bringing the scores back to 1-1.

At 1-0, Waghorn was taken down in the box by Joe Bennett and calls for a penalty came from the Derby camp. And in the run up to Cardiff’s equaliser, Philip Cocu believes there was a handball from a Cardiff player.

“It’s hard to take, with the decisions on the penalties key. With Waghorn, it’s a clear penalty, and if you go 2-0 up the confidence of the team will be higher and the chance of three points in the pocket is very big.”

Cocu said that it seemed there was a handball in the passage of play that led to Cardiff winning the penalty, which Glatzel duly converted.

“These decisions are not going our way at the moment but that’s the way it is.”

“I think it will happen, It’s a big league,” said Cocu when asked if he thinks VAR will be introduced into the Championship having been brought into the Premier League for the 2019/20 campaign.

“Slowly you see more and more leagues, international games working with VAR. Technology comes into football step by step. It’s hard to predict but maybe in one or two seasons we will have it, and still, there will be discussions about VAR. I’m not saying it’s the solution for everything.”
