Philip Cocu happy with Derby County’s reaction in 1-1 Cardiff City draw

Derby County manager Philip Cocu has said that he was pleased by his side’s reaction in their 1-1 draw with Cardiff City on Friday night, having suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford prior to the international break.

Derby County and Cardiff City played out a 1-1 draw at Pride Park on Friday night as Championship football returns after the international break. Left-back Scott Malone put Derby County ahead after just six minutes, rebounding from Martyn Waghorn’s shot.

Cardiff City’s summer signing Robert Glatzel was then fouled in the box by Rams captain Richard Keogh. The German striker then picked himself up to fire past Kelle Roos and bag his first goal for the club, bringing the scores back to 1-1.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, Derby boss Philip Cocu said he was happy to see his side improve on their poor performance at Brentford, in which they were comfortably beaten 3-0.

I am proud of the reaction from the Brentford game,” Cocu said. “We needed a performance and I think we deserved to win.

“Cardiff play a direct game so we had to deal with that and it was a physical encounter. I think we did very well in that aspect and I told the players that afterwards; we fought well. We tried to play as much as possible and I think we played well. We had chances to score more, we hit the crossbar and forced saves from their goalkeeper, but we couldn’t get that goal.

“I want to thank the fans for their support. They kept supporting the team and it gives them a really good boost to keep on going when they are tired. We will do our best to give our fans three points in our next home game, as well as against Leeds next weekend.”
