The EFL have confirmed that Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson has won the Championship Player of the Month award for August after a strong start to the 2019/20 campaign.

Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson has won the award for Championship Player of the Month for the opening month of the season. Johnson saw off tough opposition from the likes of Charlton Athletic’s in-form striker Lyle Taylor, Swansea City centre-back Mike van der Hoorn and Brentford forward Ollie Watkins to win the award.

Johnson has enjoyed a strong start to the new season, starring in the midfield of Alex Neil’s Preston side. The 26-year-old has scored an impressive four goals and provided three assists in five starts for the club, helping them to three wins and one draw in the process, also netting in their 3-2 loss to Swansea.

Speaking upon the confirmation of his award, Johnson said that he is happy to have received the award for his strong start to the campaign but heaped praise on his teammates, saying he would not have been able to get it without them.

“On a personal level I am happy to get the award, but without the boys this wouldn’t have been achievable, so credit to them as well. 

“I have been really pleased with the start of the season, but there is still a long way to go; hopefully I can keep this form up and continue to help the team. I like to play in that position higher up the pitch, where I can contribute with assists and goals.”
