Leeds United yesterday announced the successful contract extension with midfield powerhouse Kalvin Phillips on a new five year deal at Elland Road, a sign of intent indeed, but will the deal really ward off potential interest?

In a move that has been hugely anticipated at Elland Road for the entirety of the summer, with twists and turns and bumps in the road in the shape of interest from Premier League clubs to manoeuvre, but with a period of uncertainty now behind them, Leeds have managed to snare Phillips for a further five years.

Phillips (23) has been a revelation under the stewardship of new boss Marcelo Bielsa, with a team built around him he is now fully adept at the deep-lying midfield role, integrating into a back three when The Whites do not have the ball.

As part of yesterdays new deal at Elland Road, the clubs hierarchy have moved to include a sell on clause within Phillips’ deal, meaning that any club who pay between £20-25m would have the option to speak with the Leeds-born player… IF Leeds United fail to gain promotion to the Premier League this season.

This news will be of interest to the likes of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers who have both shown serious interest in the anchorman this summer, so Leeds fans will hoping, even more so than usual, that the club can finally return to the big time following a sixteen year hiatus.

Here is the announcement with a few reactions from Phillips’ fellow players… including Jack Grealish, and some sportsmen from different fields.
