New Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk turned down jobs over the summer

New Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has admitted he turned down job offers over the summer.

The 40-year-old parted company with Birmingham City at the end of last season.

Monk, who spent time as a player with the Owls, has also previously managed Swansea City, Leeds United and Middlesbrough.

He has been speaking after his appointment at Hillsborough, as per a report by the Sheffield Star: “It was very strange being off over the summer, but I used it as a positive in the sense that it gave me time to go and watch a lot of games”

A lot of the time you are only really watching or trying to prepare for the game in front of you or maybe two to three games in front of you at the club you are at. I have watched a variety of football. I watched a lot of Championship games as well other games to see how clubs are working and try and get a gauge on that.”

“I always try and use the time to study and understand how you can improve what you do. I have actually enjoyed watching a number of games this season.”
He added: “There was certain interest, but (Wednesday) were the main one. As soon as I heard they wanted to speak to me and we had those discussions, it was a no-brainer.”
Monk’s first game in charge of the Owls is away to Huddersfield Town next Sunday.
