Birmingham City have been hit with an injury blow to on-loan winger Jefferson Montero as confirmed on their official website.

The winger was forced off after 29 minutes of his starting debut for Blues against Stoke City last weekend but had to leave the field on a stretcher following a thigh injury.

The Midlands side have now confirmed that the Ecuadorian is now facing an extended spell on the sidelines after scans revealed muscle damage.

A statement from the club said: “He came off worse in a collision and suffered damage to his thigh. Scans have revealed an issue with the muscle and the winger won’t be returning to action for several weeks.”

Montero joined Blues on a season loan from Swansea City on transfer deadline day and had impressed so far in his cameo appearances and this news will no doubt come as a blow to the Championship side.

Montero’s career in England has been hampered by many injury setbacks and this latest one is just another in a long line for the unfortunate loan man.

The Swansea man’s injury record makes for grim reading and it looks unlikely that he will be given another chance at the Liberty Stadium with his contract set to run out this summer and him being shipped out to Blues further emphasising him being deemed surplus to requirements at the Welsh side.

It’s understood the player will stay at St Andrew’s to receive treatment as there is no recall clause in the terms of his current loan deal.
