Leeds United defender joins Sunderland on season-long loan deal

Sunderland have completed the signing of Leeds United defender Laurens De Bock on a season-long loan deal as confirmed on their official website.

With the League One and Two transfer window now having reached deadline day, the Mackems have made their seventh summer signing with the acquisition of De Bock.

The left-back moved to Elland Road in January 2018 after making over 100 appearances for Belgian side Club Brugge during a five-year spell which included games in the Champions League and Europa League competitions.

The 26-year-old is delighted that the move has been completed: “I am very happy to be here because I have heard a lot of good things about the club. I’ve spoken to other Belgians who have played here and they’ve all spoken very highly about the place. “

“I know the team wants to go up this season and hopefully my experience will help us achieve that. The manager has been really positive in the conversations I’ve had with him and that’s given me a great feeling because I know they believe in me.”

Sunderland have enjoyed a strong start to the new season in League One aiming to put their play-off final heartbreak behind them but their unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt against Peterborough on Saturday as they endured a 3-0 defeat.

Mackems boss Jack Ross also expressed his delight with the signing of De Bock. “Getting some competition into our left side has been a priority for a while now. We have had to work hard to get Laurens in because he’s a player that’s got a really good pedigree in terms of Champions League and Europa League experience. “

“He’s excited about coming here so we’re looking forward to working with him.”

De Bock signed a contract with Leeds in 2018 as they handed the defender a four-and-a-half year contract at Elland Road but now looks set to progress for the short term with the North East club.
