Leeds United youngster earns surprise England call-up

Ransom Olds is credited with the invention of the modern production line style of assembly. It is a term that has entered the modern lexicon.

In the modern sense, Leeds United’s youth set-up is a sparkling production line. It is one that has seen player after player come through the ranks before moving on to ‘bigger’ clubs. The Premier League has the likes of Fabian Delph and James Milner playing for Everton and Liverpool. with more recent products such as Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor plying their trade for Bournemouth and Burnley.

This week, as clubs enter the first international break, a number of Leeds United youth players have received international call-ups. Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke have been picked for England Under-20s, with fellow Academy product Nohan Kenneh being called up to the Under-17s. Alfie McAlmont (Ireland Under-21) and Kun Temenuzhkov (Bulgaria Under-21) seemed to have fulfilled the international call-ups.

However, Ryan Edmondson is the latest young Whites star to receive his international papers:

Edmondson, of course, was a signing from Leeds near neighbours York City, arriving at Elland Road as a 16-year-old. He’s still only 18, and he is raw, but he has goals in him. He’s shown that this current pre-season and his goals have added to the confidence that he knows where the back of the net his.

However, England Under-19 boss Keith Downing is probably looking at last season’s form when assessing Edmondson for inclusion with the national side. York-born youngster Edmondson hit 24 goals for Leeds United’s Under-23s in their successful campaign last season.

Edmondson is strong, powerfully-built and hard to push off the ball and has shown that he can bully fully-grown men at centre-back. It will be interesting to see how he copes against Germany and Greece’s rated Under-19s.
