Marcus Maddison “buzzing” to score vs Sunderland as Posh seal third straight win

Speaking to the club’s official website (quotes via Chronicle Live), Peterborough United star said he was “buzzing” to score against former club Sunderland, as his brace helped Posh to a 3-0 win, securing three successive wins in the process.

Peterborough United endured a difficult opening few games, but have managed to turn it around in their last three matches. Their 3-0 win against Sunderland sees them climb to 7th place.

Marcus Maddison opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick before Josh Knight drilled home a second. Maddison then netted his second of the game with a second-half strike, securing all three points for his side. The playmaker’s goals takes him to three goals and five assists in six League One games so far this season, continuing to show that he holds ability above League One level.

Speaking after the game, Maddison said he wouldn’t be where he is now without Sunderland, having started his youth career with the club, but admitted that it was a sweet feeling to score against the,

“Scoring goals is massive and Sunderland football club is where I started. Without them I wouldn’t be a footballer today. It is nice to score against my old team, so I was buzzing.”

Maddison then discussed his first goal, in which he fired home a free-kick from long range, leaving Jon McLaughlin rooted to the spot.

“They either go 20 yards over the bar, cause a problem or go in.”

He then went on to add that he felt the Black Cats lost their heads after Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke were both sent off, prompting him to change his mind about wanting to come off as he wanted to use the two-man advantage to bag his first hat-trick.

“I felt they were kicking us and you’ve just got to take that as you’re doing the right thing, you’re frustrating the opposition and as long as you continue to do what you’re doing, they’re going to get angrier and angrier and they clearly did and lost all control,” he said.

“I’ve never scored a hat-trick in football before so I wanted to stay on but for some reason against nine men we just kept the ball at the back, they stayed in their shape and it was a bit of damage control for them. After about five minutes I was regretting my decision, I was knackered!”
