Meyler has been suffering with long term injuries associated with his right knee and how has now decided that this is the right time to call it quits.

The Ireland international announced his decision, which he admits came after “a few hard days of thinking” about his future.

The versatile central midfielder was capped 26 times for his country and spent over a decade in English football following his move to Sunderland over a decade ago.

As well as plying his trade with Sunderland he enjoyed spells with Hull City and Reading and spent several seasons in the Premier League.

He signed for Reading last summer but only made five appearances for the Championship side before going out on loan to Coventry City in January. His contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier this summer and has now made the decision to hang up his boots.

Meyler made his Ireland debut against Oman in 2012 and played in a variety of positions for boss Martin O’Neill and was pivotal in the Euro 2016 qualifiers for his country.

The midfielder enjoyed plenty of success in English football as during his six seasons with the Tigers he twice helped them win promotion to the Premier League and played in the 2014 FA Cup final.

It’s unfortunate that Meyler felt he had to come to this decision at just 30-years-old but he can look proudly on his time spent in England.
