Celtic are set to beat Manchester City to the signing of Birmingham defender Mitchell Roberts according to The Daily Mail.

The highly rated youngster can still make the switch to Scotland due to the extension of the transfer window allowing Celtic to made headway in signing him.

The talented Birmingham man has been monitored by Pep Guardiola after he has impressed in the development squad for the Midlands side. He caught the eye of Manchester City in the summer when Birmingham Under-23s played in a friendly at the Etihad Campus.

The Scottish Champions have also been scouting Roberts and will look to pursue ahead with a deal whilst their transfer window remains open.

The teenager signed a one-year professional deal in the summer at St Andrews and is expected to be sold at a considerable profit by Birmingham at some point in the near future.

Back in 2011 he was playing Sunday League football before being scouted by Blues and given a contract but he is now looking to make the step up once more. Roberts battled back from a knee injury during his first year as a scholar but impressed after completing his rehab and starred for the Under-18s and Under-23s.

He has previously cited John Stones as his hero and is looking to replicate his progression. With Stones plying his trade at Manchester City this could encourage the youngster to turn down the SPL side in favour of a switch to the Etihad albeit not until at least January.
