Derby County boss heaps praise on youngsters after 1-1 draw with West Brom

Speaking to the club’s official website, Derby County manager Philip Cocu has heaped praise on youngsters Jason Knight and Lee Buchanan after they both started in the Rams’ 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Derby County and West Brom played out a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon, with penalties from Martyn Waghorn and Kenneth Zohore the only goals of the game. Waghorn missed a second penalty before Zohore scored with 84 minutes on the clock.

Rams academy graduates Jason Knight and Lee Buchanan have been in and around the first-team picture over the course of the start of the season and they started at Pride Park on Saturday. And speaking to the club website, Derby boss Philip Cocu has delivered his verdict on the pair, praising Knight and Buchanan for their performances.

“It is positive. Also, two young players showed that they can act on this level of football in our team, which is good.

“Lee needed 20 minutes to lose his nerves, keep calm and play the game like he can Jason has already played some minutes and he played better and better as the game went on.

“After the first 20 minutes, Lee played a really good in the game. He was good in defence and solid on the ball. I am really happy to see it for the club that they did well.

“They will not be able to play 46 games, they have to learn how to deal with the loads and the intensity of training but most importantly we see the potential. If they do well then they play, and they did. If they proceed and continue working in this way then they have a good future.”
