Nathan Jones gives honest assessment of Stoke City’s poor performance in 3-1 loss to Preston

Stoke City boss Nathan Jones has said that his players have got to stop shooting themselves in the foot if they want to see a change in results, after they fell to another loss, this time at the hands of Preston North End.

Preston North End picked up their second win of the Championship season, defeating Stoke City 3-1 on Wednesday night and succumbing the Potters to bottom of the table in the process.

Daniel Johnson and Billy Bodin benefitted from first-half mistakes from Jack Butland to put Preston 2-0 up heading into the half-time break. Midfielder Josh Harrop added a third with just over 20 minutes remaining before James McLean netted a consolation for Stoke City, who now have just one point from a possible 12.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the game, Stoke boss Nathan Jones has said that his side needs to cut out the errors if they want to see an upturn in results.

“Look we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. We started really well and for eight minutes we penned in their half, but from their first foray forward they score. It’s so frustrating and things have to change. We have to be more streetwise and not concede such silly goals.

“We’ve had as good, if not better chances than them tonight but it was never really a contest the way we went about it. Look, we haven’t done a hell a lot of wrong but tame shots have gone in and they haven’t had to work hard for the third goal.

“We’ve had one cleared off the line and had enough opportunities to get something out of the game but you can’t give away the goals we have tonight.”
