Fulham confirm departure of misfit striker in permanent return to Portugal

Fulham have confirmed on their official club website that Portuguese striker Rui Fonte has completed a return to his home country, linking up with former side Braga SC on a permanent basis.

The summer transfer window has been a busy one for Fulham after their relegation back to the Championship. While the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Frank-Andre Zambo Anguissa have both left, Ivan Cavaleiro and Anthony Knockaert have both joined, while star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has penned a new deal.

Now, the club have confirmed the departure of another player. Striker Rui Fonte has returned to Portgual with former club Braga SC on a permanent basis, with Fulham announcing the move after their impressive 4-0 win over Millwall.

A brief statement on their official website read:

“The Club can confirm that Rui Fonte has today joined Sporting Clube de Braga on a permanent transfer.

“The Portuguese forward spent the most part of last season on loan at Lille Olympique Sporting Club who finished second in Ligue 1.

“We’d all like to wish Rui all the best in the future and thank him for his services at Fulham.”

Fonte made the move to Craven Cottage back in the summer of 2017 and struggled to make an impact at Fulham. He made 29 appearances, scoring three goals and providing five assists along the way. The striker spent last season on loan in France with Lille OSC, where he scored just once in 20 appearances.

Now, with his move away confirmed, Fonte will be hoping to recapture the form he previously showed with Braga and caught the attention of Fulham two years ago.
