Leeds United were blocked in bid to sign defender on permanent deal

Leeds United were blocked by Brighton & Hove Albion as they attempted to sign defender Ben White on a permanent deal according to Football Insider.

The Whites acquired the centre back on a season-long loan deal in this summer’s transfer market but were prevented from signing him permanently as Brighton believe he has the pedigree to make it into their first team in the coming years.

The Championship giants pushed for the obligation to sign White permanently at the end of the season to be included in the deal but Brighton refused this option in the contract.

Brighton are willing to allow White to gain further first team experience in the second tier of English football but they hold him in high regard at the AMEX Stadium.

White has made a hugely encouraging start to the third loan of his career after previous spells in League One and League Two with Peterborough United and Newport County respectively.

He has started all three league games for Marco Bielsa’s men and performed impressively in central defence as they have picked up seven points from nine and currently sit top of the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa is a big admirer of the defender, and requested that Leeds explore a loan-to-buy deal but his plan didn’t come to fruition and he had to settle for a straight loan option for the youngster.

Depending on the season Brighton have in the Premier League, a permanent deal at the end of the season can’t be completely unforeseen. Should they struggle in the top flight and Leeds get promoted it is not beyond all likelihood that a deal could be reached, particularly if he continues to impress at Elland Road.
