PREVIEW: Middlesbrough v Wigan Athletic

New Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate will be hoping to finally notch his first win when his side welcome Wigan Athletic to The Riverside Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Boro have collected just one point from their opening three Sky Bet Championship matches this season while they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in the first round by fourth tier outfit Crewe Alexandra.

Next up is a Wigan Athletic side who have failed to score in their last three matches, a sequence which began after their 3-2 home win over Cardiff City on opening day.

Boro go into the match without Dael Fry, Rudy Gestede and Hayden Coulson who all remain sidelined through injury. Defender George Friend could play through the pain barrier with the player set to battle a thigh problem.

Wigan Athletic arrive on Teesside without the services of summer signing Joe Williams who is suspended. Attacking quintet Josh Windass, Anthony Pilkington, Joe Garner and Joe Gelhardt are all reported to be set to miss the match through injury.

It was Middlesbrough who won last season’s contest 2-0 with Jordan Hugill netting both goals. The two sides played out a goalless draw in the reverse fixture in March.

The match is scheduled to kick-off at 7.45pm with admission available for both sets of fans on the day.
