“It’s an absolute honour” – Blackburn Rovers man on being handed captaincy after Mulgrew’s Wigan switch

Blackburn Rovers man Elliott Bennett has said it is an “absolute honour” to have been handed the captain’s armband after the loan departure of skipper Charlie Mulgrew to Wigan Athletic.

Charlie Mulgrew’s departure to Wigan Athletic left the captain’s armband up for grabs at Ewood Park and after weighing up his options, Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray opted to hand the armband to utility man Elliott Bennett.

Bennett was handed the captain’s armband on a number of occasions in the absence of Mulgrew through injury, with centre-back Darragh Lenihan also captaining Rovers on occasion. But now, Bennett will lead out Mowbray’s side for the upcoming season. And, Bennett has stressed his pride over being named the captain of the club.

“It’s an absolute honour to be asked because this is a magnificent football club,” Bennett said to Rovers’ club website.

“To have the backing of the boys and the gaffer to take over the role from Charlie while he’s away is a huge honour and one that I’m relishing.

“I don’t feel any extra pressure with it, to be honest. To lead the lads out and to have that responsibility, it’s great, but I don’t think anything will change with me – I’m mouthy in the dressing room anyway. Even without being captain, I talk more than anyone anyway. I’m not looking to change who I am. Some of the lads call me ‘Siri’ because if you need a question answered you come to me!

“Whether you’re captain or not, whether you’re playing or sitting in the stand, all you want to do is to see the team win. I want to win matches and as captain, it makes it all the more satisfying when you achieve that.”
