Bristol City, Reading and Wigan Athletic want former Everton defender

According to The Sun’s Phil Cadden – as cited by Bristol Live – Championship trio Bristol City, Wigan Athletic and Reading are all keen on signing former Everton defender Ashley Williams, who is available on a free transfer after his release from the Premier League side.

Welsh defender Ashley Williams is without a club after his release from Premier League side Everton, where he was deemed surplus to requirements upon the arrival of Marco Silva. However, it has now been claimed that he is the subject of interest from Championship sides.

Bristol City, Reading and Wigan Athletic have all been said keen on the defender, with the Robins said to be in negotiations with Williams over a potential deal which would see him put pen to paper on a deal running through until the end of the current campaign.

Lee Johnson has been looking at the free-agent market to try and bring in some much-needed centre-back reinforcements and it appears Williams has been identified as a potential option.

The 34-year-old comes with plenty of experience, making over 600 career appearances in all competitions since emerging through the youth academy with Hednesford Town. Williams joined Stockport County in 2003, where he went on to play 165 games, helping them into the football league.

In January 2008, the defender made the move to Swansea City, where ended up staying for eight years, making a massive 352 appearances for the club before moving to Everton in 2016. Williams played 73 games for the Toffees until his release. He spent last season on loan in the Championship with Stoke City, playing 37 times for the club across all competitions, scoring one goal and assisting one goal.
