The tale behind Leeds United’s transfer of talented striker

A report by The Athletic has revealed how Leeds United secured the services of young Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah. The article explains the dramatic twists and turns that took place on deadline day, as the deal for the forward hung in the balance, with three teams looking to complete the transfer.

It has been revealed that Leeds were joined by Bristol City and Fortuna Dussledorf in hot pursuit of the 20-year-old. The trio tussled for the transfer, and for a long-time Arsenal remained largely undecided as to where they should send their young star. In order to assist Arsenal’s decision making, representatives of the three clubs were invited to the Gunner’s London Colney training ground to give a pitch proposing why they were the best suitor for Nketiah.

The Athletic explains that each representative would put forward their ideologies and plans to a team of three consisting of Arsenal’s loan manager, their chief contract negotiator, and Nketiah himself. It is understood that each pitch not only included financial terms of the potential transfer, but statistics and data that intended to corroborate the claim that Nketiah would be best suited at their club. Statistics are being used increasingly in Europe’s top leagues, and it is this meticulous attention to detail that is characteristic of modern-day football, and undoubtedly will be utilised further in the future.

Ultimately, it was Leeds United who Nketiah and Arsenal chose as the best destination for his development. Leeds had sent director of football, Victor Orta, to propose the benefits of a move to Elland Road and the Athletic reports that undeniably, Orta’s long-term friendship with Gunners’ boss Unai Emery played an important factor in Arsenal’s decision. However, more crucially was Orta’s PowerPoint presentation that demonstrated how Leeds’ style of football would allow Nketiah to flourish.

Nketiah scored his first Leeds goal in the Carabao Cup victory against Salford City on Tuesday evening, and is in strong contention for his first league start this weekend against Wigan Athletic.
