West Brom 1-2 Millwall – Player Ratings

West Bromwich Albion lost 2-1 to Millwall in the first round of the Carabao Cup last night and many of the players for the Baggies underperformed and here we rate the players from the defeat to the Lions.

JONATHAN BOND – 6

Made a couple of magnificent saves to deny Millwall when the scores were level at 1-1. Despite conceding two goals he received little help from the defenders in front of him.

DARNELL FURLONG – 6

Always an outlet on the right hand side providing width and pace. Tried to deliver crosses whenever he could and looks a solid option.

SEMI AJAYI – 5

With the ball at his feet he looks comfortable, but with the ball in the air he looks far from assured at times. Can play in defensive midfield and may be more suited to that role but with Albion short of centre backs with Hegazi injured needs must for now.

DARA O’SHEA – 6

The better of the centre backs, he displayed no nonsense tackles when the ball was in dangerous areas and was a threat in the box. A more than solid debut for the Irishman.

CONOR TOWNSEND – 5

Always has a lot to live up to when attempting to replace the experienced Kieran Gibbs. Was occasionally caught out but tried to bomb forward when he could.

REKEEM HARPER – 5

The decision to play Jake Livermore over Harper has been questioned but this performance summed up why. Little energy and little offered by the youngster, not one of his better displays.

CHRIS BRUNT – 6

The experienced man surrounded by youngsters. He broke up play well at times, displayed a good range of passing and always tried to get forward.

OLIVER BURKE – 4

To give Burke a 4 is being generous. Since his arrival he has failed to prove his critics wrong and he continues to flatter to deceive. £15million spent on the Scot and enthusiasm and effort is the least a player should give and he failed spectacularly on this showing.

KYLE EDWARDS – 5

Began lively but faded afterwards. Possibly became leggy which is understandable having played three games in a little over a week. A rest on Saturday for one of the new boys may be the answer.

GRADY DIANGANA – 6

Showed bursts of pace in an offensive capacity and some neat touches. Tested Steele before Austin’s goal and looks to be a livewire with real talent.

CHARLIE AUSTIN – 6

Got his goal within 9 minutes and showed a lot of good things in attacking areas on his debut for the club. Has to be an absolute banker to start on Saturday.

SUBS:

MATHEUS PEREIRA – 6

Roughed up a little by the Millwall players but he showed glimpses of pace and silky touches, definitely one to watch this season.

FILIP KROVINOVIC – 5

Tried as always to affect the game but will have a bigger impact to make on Saturday.

ROMAINE SAWYERS – 5

Didn’t have too much time to make an impact but never lacked effort or endeavour.
