Former West Brom, Wigan Athletic and Blackpool defender on trial with Luton Town

Luton Town manager Graeme Jones has confirmed that free agent defender Donervon Daniels is training with the club after his release from League One side Blackpool at the end of last season.

Former Blackpool defender Donervon Daniels is a free agent after his release from the Tangerines at the end of last season and is now looking to earn a deal with Championship side Luton Town.

Graeme Jones has confirmed while speaking to Luton Today that Daniels came in during pre-season before suffering an injury. As such, the Hatters were unable to run the rule over him earlier this summer. But, the ex-West Brom is being given another chance to impress Jones and co.

“He was here on the first day of pre-season and hurt his thigh, so we just allowing Donervon to come in and train,” Jones said to Luton Today.

“Gary (Brabin) knows him well from his time at Blackpool, and he seems a really, really good character. We’ll have a look at him and I’m sure he’s having a look at us and no promises, just see how that goes.

“He’s a centre back, or a full back, he gives you good cover. His family are based in London even though he lives up north, we committed to him in pre-season.

“I thought he showed a real willingness to come down here, turn down a lot of League One opportunities because he believes he’s a Championship player and I think you have to admire that. It’s easy to take the money sometimes and the security, but he wants to play as high as he can, there’s not many in that category, so I’m quite intrigued by him.

“I remember him from his time at Wigan, he played a huge part in them getting promoted to the Championship from League One, so no commitment from his side, or our side, we’re just having a look. I’m sure he is having a look at us as well so we’ll see where it goes.”

Daniels made his breakthrough into senior football during his time with West Brom, coming through the Baggies’ youth ranks before heading out on loan to the likes of Tranmere Rovers, Gillingham, Blackpool and Aberdeen.

He left West Brom in 2015, heading to Wigan Athletic on a free transfer. During his time with Wigan he also had a loan stint with Rochdale before leaving to join Blackpool last summer, leaving the Tangerines after one season.

Now, he will be hoping to impress Graeme Jones and the Luton coaching staff in an attempt to earn a deal with the club.
