Portsmouth and Coventry City to battle it out for former Doncaster Rovers loan star

According to a report from the Portsmouth News, League One pair Portsmouth and Coventry City will go head to head in the battle to sign highly-rated Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane on loan for the upcoming season.

Over the course of the summer transfer window, a number of clubs from the Championship were linked with loan moves for Liverpool’s young midfielder Herbie Kane. Kane starred in Doncaster Rovers’ play-off side last season and caught the eyes of a number of clubs.

Charlton Athletic, Hull City, Millwall and Luton Town were all linked with Kane, but the transfer window for Championship clubs slammed shut on Thursday with the 20-year-old still at Anfield. Now, with the League One window still open, it has been aid that Portsmouth and Coventry City are set to battle it out to try and secure Kane for the 2019/20 League One season.

Kenny Jackett is keen to link up with Kane and Coventry City are looking to bring him in as a replacement for Tom Bayliss, who left the Sky Blues this summer to link up with Preston North End.

Last season was Kane’s first season of senior football, but his performances made him a fixture in Grant McCann’s side. He played in 49 games for the club, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists in the process.

Prior to his loan spell with Doncaster, Kane had spent his time playing for the youth sides at Liverpool, playing for the Under-23s and Under-18s as well as representing the club in the UEFA Youth Cup.
