Former Leeds United and Middlesbrough goalkeeper set for surprise Liverpool move

A report from Lancs Live has claimed that Premier League side Liverpool are set to sign former Leeds United and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, who is a free agent after leaving Boro earlier this summer.

During the preparations for the 2019/20 season, we reported here on The72 that former Leeds United and Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Lonergan had linked up with Champions League holders Liverpool for their pre-season tour of the United States to cover for their goalkeeper worries.

Now, with Alisson suffering an injury in Liverpool’s opening day clash with newly promoted Norwich City, Liverpool now only have Adrian and a number of youngsters to cover, so they will look to bring in Andy Lonergan to provide some further cover.

Simon Mignolet’s departure leaves Jurgen Klopp in desperate need of further cover and Lonergan looks set to be the surprise option to come in. Lonergan is available on a free transfer and will likely only join on a short-term deal depending on the severity of Alisson’s injury.

Over the course of his career, Lonergan, 35, has amassed plenty of Football League experience. He has played for Preston North End, Blackpool, Wycombe Wanderers, Swindon Town, Leeds United (twice), Bolton Wanderers, Fulham, Wolves, Middlesbrough and Rochdale along the way since coming through the youth academy at Deepdale.

In total, Lonergan has played 405 career matches over the course of 17 years, with 335 of those coming in the Championnship. He has kept 91 clean sheets in the process and could be set for a return to football with Liverpool.
