Birmingham City boss reflects on missing out on Stoke City striker on deadline day

Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet has claimed he is happy with the club’s transfer dealings despite missing out on Benik Afobe on transfer deadline day according to The Bristol Post.

Their opponents for tomorrow’s game Bristol City beat them to the capture of Afobe with Blues looking to add to their attacking options before the close of the window.

There was even a last gasp attempt to prise Dwight Gayle from Newcastle United but they couldn’t match their valuation of the striker.

26-year-old Afobe eventually decided on Bristol City and is now in line to make his debut against Birmingham.

Clotet claimed that despite not acquiring a striker which he was looking to do, he was still relatively happy with their transfer business.

“I am happy with the business we have done, not all the transfer targets came in, but you can’t have everything, I am so focused on getting everyone together, getting the group to know each other and making sure they know what it means to play for this club.”

“The transfer window has given us options, the new lads will make the squad more competitive, more flexible and more dynamic.”

“The lads are hungry to achieve results, I’ve seen it in all of our players – our captain, the seniors and the youngsters.”

“As a coach, you want to have all the forwards you can, we landed a lot of the players we wanted to land, now it is time to work and put that focus on the pitch and make sure we build on what we did last season and push this club forward.”

Blues are looking to make it two successive wins tomorrow when they take on the Robins after beating Brentford 1-0 on the opening weekend of the Championship season.
