Derby County could look to loan midfielder out with Oxford United keen

According to a report from the Derby Telegraph, Derby County could still offload midfielder George Thorne on loan, with League One side Oxford United said keen on bringing him in.

The transfer window slammed shut yesterday at 5 pm for Premier League and Championship clubs, but the window remains open until September 2nd for clubs from League One and League Two sides. And, it has been claimed that Oxford United could look to make a move to reinforce their midfield department before the start of next month.

Oxford are said to have identified midfielder Goerge Thorne of Derby County as a transfer target this summer. The Rams are likely to allow Thorne to leave the club on loan before the League One window closes with a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order at Pride Park.

As it stands, Thorne is injured, but he could be sent out on loan after recovering from a calf injury he suffered over the course of the summer during the club’s pre-season training camp in Florida.

Thorne has been plagued with injury problems since joining the in 2014 from West Brom. He has played 73 times for the club since making the move, scoring five goals and providing six assists along the way. The 26-year-old was sent out on loan for the second half of last season, joining up with Luton Town. He played three times as the Hatters won promotion to the Championship.

It will be interesting to see if Oxford United are able to bring Thorne in on loan before the end of the window or if the midfielder remains with Derby to compete for a place in Philip Cocu’s first-team plans.
