Middlesbrough place ‘concrete bid’ for Southampton winger

According to journalist Arilas Ould-Saada of Norwegian sports site VG, Middlesbrough are interested in pursuing a deal for Southampton winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Middlesbrough Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate is looking to add pace and power in wide areas ahead of the 5pm deadline on Thursday evening and has reportedly identified Elyounoussi as a potential target.

The 22 time Norway international didn’t nail down a starting place for Southampton last season, following his £16 million fee from Swiss side Basel, and may be seen as surplus to requirements by Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Southampton have just signed Mali international winger Moussa Djenepo from Belgium side Standard Liege, and may have pushed Elyounoussi out of the club.

The 25-year old is reportedly looking to leave this transfer window and has been linked to the likes of Besiktas in Turkey, as well as Spanish La Liga duo Sevilla and Celta Vigo. It is believed Middlesbrough have entered the race, but considering the other sides vying for his signature, it would seem unlikely he would opt for Teesside.

It is not yet known whether the ‘concrete bid’ of which Ould-Saada reports is a loan bid or an approach to sign Elyounoussi on a permanent deal. If Boro were looking to sign the Norwegian on a permanent transfer, Southampton would likely want to receive a sum close to what they paid initially for the winger last summer.

Middlesbrough currently have Marvin Johnson, Marcus Browne and Marcus Tavernier who can operate in wide areas, as well as Ashley Fletcher who operated out wide in their first game of the season against Luton last week.
