Wigan pursuing permanent deal for Middlesbrough defender

According to Gazette Live (live blog 11:43am), Wigan Athletic are interested in a permanent deal for Middlesbrough defender Ryan Shotton.

Wigan are looking to bring in a defender before this evening’s transfer deadline, and have identified Middlesbrough’s Ryan Shotton as a potential target.

The report states that Boro ‘won’t stand in his way’ if Wigan were to make an offer that matches the Teessiders’ valuation of the player.

Shotton started the club’s first game of the season away at Kenilworth Road against Luton last Friday, and was expected to feature heavily this season under new Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate.

If he was to depart, it is believed Woodgate would not look to sign a replacement, as he feels he has enough cover already in this position. Dael Fry and Dani Ayala are the only recognised first team centre halves at the club, but George Friend could play a part in the centre of defence, and youngster Nathan Wood was on the bench for Boro’s curtain raiser last week, and could feature if needed.

Shotton’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and Woodgate could be looking to cash in on the player if he deems the defender surplus to requirements.

He is able to play at both centre-back and right-back, and his versatility will stand him in good stead at any club he would sign for. He would be expected to play mostly in the centre at Boro if he was to stay, given the signing of right-back Anfernee Dijksteel from Charlton this week.
