The Rams have signed for the former Manchester United star on a player-coach basis and he will join up with them in January once he has completed his season with DC United in America.
As well as continuing his playing career with Derby he will also join their coaching set up as he develops his credentials for a potential career in management.
There is no doubt that this is one of the most sensational stories in this transfer window with Rooney having made over 700 appearances and with 300 goals to his name in club football. He has scored a record 253 goals for Manchester United and is one of the biggest and most recognisable names in world football.
Derby manager Phillip Cocu is understandably delighted to have acquired a footballer of such quality. “Wayne Rooney is an extremely talented and top-class footballer.”
“It is an exciting prospect for him to be joining Derby County and he can bring so much to this squad, both on and off the pitch. He has enjoyed a wonderful career, both in club football and for England, and he still has so much to give as well.”
Rooney is a massive coup for the Championship side whose experience and natural goalscoring ability could make them a real force this season.
As well as high praise from the manager, Derby fans are equally as delighted with the signing of Rooney and expressed their delight on Twitter.
