Brighton complete deal for Brentford striker

Brentford have lost star striker Neal Maupay. The Frenchman has sealed a move to Premier League Brighton.

Maupay leaves Brentford for Brighton for a reported fee of £20 million. The move will come as a disappointment but not unexpected for Brentford fans as Maupay finished last season as the leagues joint top scorer. He netted 25 goals last term as Brentford missed out on the play-offs.

Speculation over his future has been rife all summer, news was excepted out of the club in the next few days after Maupay didn’t feature in Saturday’s 1-0 season opener defeat against Birmingham City.

He departs Brentford having scored 41 goals in 95 appearances for the club he joined in 2017. He has signed a four year deal at Brighton.

Although the fee has been reported as undisclosed, Brentford were rumoured to be asking for at least £20 million according to West London Sport.

Maupay will be a huge loss to Brentford who now must dip into the market in the remaining days to replace the 25 goals that he scored last season.

This isn’t the first time Brentford have sold a star striker. Scott Hogan was sold to Aston Villa in 2017 for just shy of £10 million.

The departure of Maupay will leave many Bee’s fans concerned going forward as they only have until Thursday to replace him.

Verdict

Unfortunately for Brentford although they don’t need to sell players when the big guys come calling with that type of money, you just can’t turn it down.

The question is can Maupay deliver in the Premier League? He joins a side that found goals hard to come by in the second half of last season. He will need to hit the ground running and with a big price tag on his shoulders he will be under pressure from the start to deliver.
