Portsmouth closing in on 22 goal Sunderland and Charlton target

Portsmouth are said to be closing in on the capture of Doncaster striker John Marquis, according to The Portsmouth News.

The fee is said to be in excess of £1 million, with Portsmouth fighting off fellow interest in the player from Championship Charlton Athletic and fellow League One promotion hopefuls Sunderland. Marquis scored 22 goals last season in a Doncaster side who squeezed into the playoffs and would be a real statement of intent from Kenny Jackett who looks to complete a squad capable of promotion to the Championship.

Despite the departure of Matt Clarke to Premier League Brighton and the imminent sale of Jamal Lowe to Wigan, Pompey maintains a strong side and with the addition of such a prolific goalscorer will no doubt instill confidence into the Fratton Park faithful of a promotion-winning season. This comes alongside the capture of players such as Marcus Harness and Sean Raggett, players who would undoubtedly get into most, if not all League One sides.

Marquis would be returning to Fratton Park where he had a brief loan stint back in 2013, scoring twice in six appearances. The striker has been a key figurehead in the Doncaster team, smashing home 67 goals across 3 league campaigns in South Yorkshire which included promotion from League Two and a League One play-off campaign – both of which were alongside Portsmouth.
