Preston North End reject approach from Wigan Athletic over loan deal for midfielder

According to a report from Wigan Today, Wigan Athletic have had an enquiry for midfielder Daniel Johnson rejected by fellow Championship side Preston North End, with the Latics said keen on a loan deal.

Wigan Athletic are looking to further bolster their options before the summer transfer window slams shut in just under two weeks. Chelsea youngster Dujon Sterling looks set to join the club on loan while Everton midfielder Joe Williams is on the brink of completing a permanent switch.

As Paul Cook looks to add further depth and competition to his squad, he had reportedly identified midfielder Daniel Johnson of fellow Championship side Preston North End as a potential transfer target. However, the Latics’ approach asking about a possible loan deal that would see Johnson make the move to the DW Stadium has been turned down by North End, Wigan Today has confirmed.

Despite having their initial approach for a loan move knocked back, it is added that Wigan are still interested in Johnson and could look to bring him in on a permanent basis, depending on whether or not Preston would be willing to sell to a team in the same division and if Wigan are ready to cough up the money.

Johnson, 26, started his career with Aston Villa, spending time in the youth academy at Villa Park while also spending time out on loan with Yeovil Town, Chesterfield and Oldham Athletic. He made no appearances for the first-team at Villa Park before moving to Preston in what proved to be a bargain move at just £50,000.

Since then, Johnson has gone on to play 185 times for the club, scoring 31 goals and providing 18 assists along the way.
