Ex-Blackpool, Norwich City and West Brom midfielder turns down League Two opportunity

Wes Hoolahan has turned down a contract offer by Cambridge United.

The 37-year-old is set for a move abroad, according to a report by Cambridgeshire Live.

The experienced midfielder was released by West Brom at the end of last season and has been training with the League Two side.

Hoolahan, who is a Republic of Ireland international with 43 caps to his name, has racked up 480 appearances in his career with spells with the likes of Shelbourne, Livingston, Blackpool and Norwich City.

Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood has confirmed he won’t be joining the U’s: “Unfortunately Wes is not going to sign for us. He told me yesterday there’s a nice opportunity for him and we’ve got no hold on him and it suits him and his family.”

“We wish him all the best, it’s a blow for us as we had real hopes and every indication that he was going to be a very important factor in helping us achieve what we want to achieve this season. What we have to do is take the moments he’s been here, as he’s really lifted and improved in that short period the standard of training and shown the rest of the lads different qualities that are required.”

He added: “Of course it’s a blow, it’s one that we have to absorb and will absorb and in different ways it creates opportunities. The money assigned for Wes is now back in the budget, and we’ll have to recruit in the best way possible.”
