Blackburn Rovers linked striker turns down Championship and League One offers to make Dutch move

Striker Bassala Sambou – recently released by Premier League side Everton – has completed a move to Dutch side Fortuna Sittard, turning down offers from clubs in the Championship and League One to complete the move.

We reported here on The72 earlier this summer that Blackburn Rovers were interested in signing striker Bassala Sambou from Premier League outfit Everton, with manager Tony Mowbray said to be eyeing up a possible move for the striker who he spent time with during his stint as manager of Coventry City.

However, it has now been confirmed that he has made the move to The Netherlands and will be playing his football with Fortuna Sittard from here onwards. Reports from Holand (as cited by Sport Witness) have said that Sambou turned down offers from clubs in the Championship and in League One to make the move to the Dutch side after his release from Everton.

The Toffees did offer a new deal to the former Coventry City youngster to try and keep him at Goodison Park with David Unsworth’s Under-23s, but he turned down the offer in favour of heading elsewhere for a new challenge.

Sambou played 25 games in all competitions for Everton’s Under-23s side over the course of the 2018/19 season, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists. He played 60 games in the Premier League 2 in total and will make the step up to senior football next season, after playing in the EFL Trophy against League One and League Two opposition this season, scoring two goals in three games.
